What is blood flow restriction training?

During blood flow restriction training (BFRT), a specialized cuff is applied to an injured limb to restrict blood flow. The goal of BFRT is to enable patients to make strength gains lifting lighter loads. It can be used to treat postoperative joint reconstructions or replacements, Achilles repairs, fractures, muscle strains or rotator cuff repairs.

What are the benefits?

BFRT improves strength in injured limbs without further compromising vulnerable joints or soft tissue. Used after surgery, BFRT has been shown to increase strength and hypertrophy and diminish atrophy and loss of strength from nonuse.
